To help local businesses drive innovation, IMDA offers workshops in Design Thinking in collaboration with consultant partners. These range from open-ended ideation workshops for public signups to closed-door working sessions with business owners to guide them in shaping their vision with technology.
I’ve run workshops as a facilitator for workshops to define problem statements, guide rapid ideation for blue-sky opportunities and prioritise target solutions. Together, we’ve uncovered potential ideas for the use of new technologies in the retail, tourism and entertainment industries.
The best solutions emerge when they address the correct problems head-on.
The first step in the Design Thinking (DT) framework is to accurately identify and frame the problem—an often challenging task to nail correctly. Through problem-refinement workshops, participants learn to identify the right issues they need to address, starting from understanding users and their objectives. By employing techniques such as the 5 Whys and the Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) frameworks, participants can delve into the core of the real user problems their businesses need to solve.
With this, they can now craft targeted problem statements and prioritise these challenges against a matrix of business factors. This method can help encourage companies to discover new challenge opportunities, or refine a broad problem into a specific, actionable scope.
With well-defined problems in hand, the workshops fostered an open, creative environment for ideation. Embracing the principle that "no idea is a silly idea," exercises like Crazy 8s encouraged participants to brainstorm freely and explore a wide range of potential solutions.
These ideas are then evaluated for relevance and feasibility, whereby participants discuss and converge on an agreed approach to tackle their challenges.
Using the Double Diamond methodology, we guided businesses through both divergent and convergent thinking, ensuring a thorough exploration of problem and solution spaces. The impact was significant—participants left equipped with innovative ideas, practical tools, and a structured approach to drive ongoing innovation within their organisations.
