Stunning visual impressions convey concepts efficiently, and I decided to incorporate custom iconography to highlight Thomson Medical’s featured services on their new website design.
I designed a fresh set of branded illustrations and an icon system to enhance their digital presence, modernising their brand image while expressing their central ethos of care and empathy for their patients.
Thomson Medical’s brand focus on quality patient care meant we needed a visual style that communicates compassion and reassurance.
To evoke a modern yet warm feeling, I kept a naturalistic colour palette to ensure illustrations felt relatable, while using gradients to create a sense of lightness. The primary colour scheme was based on Thomson’s brand purple to ensure the illustrations felt branded, and warm tones were chosen to complement the brand.
Size matters—and designing spot illustrations for a smaller display means simplifying the form. While the first set of illustrations were specifically drawn for Thomson’s key service offerings, we introduced another set of spot icons to be used more generally in visually enhancing secondary information.
These icons adopted a similar colour palette and style guidelines, but were allowed to broaden their use of colour with more naturalistic hues to better represent its wider variety of subjects. The usage of blue and red in droplets, for instance, to represent water and blood more specifically. By streamlining the depictions into more geometric forms, we minimised details in the linework and kept the icons easily understood when displayed at small sizes.
